The most used platform to play MM2 online is now GameRanger, where are made gameplays with cars pretty frequently; it supports also MM1. In past it was Voobly (ex IGZ), but as far as I know, it got abandoned because of the impossibility to play MM2 online through it with mods used.
Hamachi allows to create LAN networks over the Internet, and due to this is possible to make sort of LAN gameplays with games; I see it good for private gameplay between two or few more players.

Go GameRanger. GameRanger have 80% more activity of MM2 than that of Voobly. As well as, it has much active players. Also, voobly often annoys when we start it. It downloads something whenever we start. It never starts directly. In addition, gameranger has more features and is more easy to use.
