I discovered this glitch where slamming your car into a tree sometimes causes the accelarate and reverse buttons to become flipped, so you reverse to drive and drive to reverse.

Never happened with me, but it best describes what the description says while enabling auto reverse. But even if it worked, how long will the car stay in reverse with the up arrow pressed?

It will stay in auto reverse until you completely stop the car.
It rarely happens to me if I crash my car into one of the palm trees in SF and survive the impact.

Rarely happened to me, and always when keeping pressed the down arrow key while the vehicle is totally damaged. Once that the vehicle is restored, instead to drive in reverse, it drives forward.
To "reset" the normal configuration is enough brake with the up arrow key and stop completely the car. Keeping pressing, is noticed that for a little while the reverse gear gets inserted, and it suddenly shifts to the first gear.
