I can't understand why sometimes I see some avatars (e.g. that one from vw-tuner-oburg) which are more than 6 KB and more than 90 x 90 pixels!?

This is another thing to learn. 
For your avatar you can use any picture that you want of any image and file sizes without uploading it here. The limits are refered for uploading.
Just put your direct link to that picture in your Profile page at the field Link to off-site Avatar.
