MM1 lags a lot for me, I have Windows 7 which is way above the requirements for MM1, but when I turn reflections on I get lag. I play the game with time of day set to night the lightglows from the car and traffic light cause serious lag.

You have to play with lower setting. It's just too new.

Does it lag only in cruise while steering entirely left and right?

No, it only lags when:
Its night (caused by lightglows of cars & traffic lights)
Reflections are on

I keep getting the message at the start to check for the presence of a hardware accelerator card. When I enable speed loading the game closes. I only get 640x480 resolution & if I run compatibility for Windows 98/me no audio

Enable HW graphics and whatever resolution you're on. You ought to be fine. :)

WTF? It was working yesterday (literally)...

That's Aaro4130's website. I have the file and can give it to you, with his permission, I guess.

Yeah! You got great direction.
That's definitely magic. That unbelievable Aaron helped me an year ago to make my MM1 compatible with my new graphic card!

I didn't know that it fixes lag issues though.

It fixed a lot of bugs for me, now that pesky software rendering has been solved!
