Modified Midtown2.exe.

Postby Azbestos8 » Fri Mar 11, 2011 2:31 am

About 10 minutes ago, Aaro4130 asked me to modify Midtown.exe to support *.zip archives rather than *.ar, and to disable trouble.rtf .

Kinda a genius idea if you're a dev.

I believe that switching from .ar to .zip is a great idea for developers, at least you don't have to rename the file everytime you want to test it - not that hard, but if you're lazy...
Disabling trouble.rtf is also handy for developers in the respect that if you're crashing the game, then you don't have to deal with the lock.

If anyone is interested in something like this, then please let me know.

Edit: Added below.

DOWNLOAD
Here are the modified executables for MM2. I've included 3 different exe files, with 2 variations of each = 6.

v1
https://axe42i.web44.net/dl/custo-mm2-v1.7z
- optional *.zip file support INSTEAD of *.ar
- removed mm2.lock/trouble.rtf fixes
- new icon
- other little checks

(Actual archive extention support is for *.z*, so you can play with extentions, EG, use *.z_city, *.z_car, etc. or just *.zip, it's really up to you).

Batch convert *.ar to *.zip by Aaro4130.

- very small batch (*.bat) file to convert *.ar files to *.zip

Disabling the trouble.rtf/lock file/whatever would be nice. Also adding in those fixes mashup exe would be nice too.

Like I said, if you can, I think people would really like fixes to the exe. Maybe fixes for problems that can only be solved by doing that, maybe some fixes for performance, etc. Anything that is possible I'm sure everyone would really like

I wasn't sure about the *.zip idea - I'm thinking that not everyone would want that, but I know I would.

I need to know how many different *.exe files there are for the game.

From what I have...

Midtown2.exe - original v1 from installation.
Midtown2.exe - v1.1 patched, intel cards.
Midtown2.exe - nocd v1.
Midtown2.exe - nocd v1.1 (speed boot).
mm2trial.exe - from trial version.
mm3366rel.exe - from beta #2.

Any I've missed out?

Interesting idea. The disabling of the Trouble.rtf file opening after a game crash and successive launch sounds good, also if I've kinda solved it by directly deleting that file. If it's done with a new Midtown2.exe file is perfect, without the use one of the two tools made to automatically delete the mm2.lock file.
Good for the .zip idea, but only if the support for this file format can be added to the .ar one. Indeed, only for quick tests it would be confortable, but isn't a pain add ".ar" after the file name when making it with WinZip or WinRar and ZIP compression.

The different game .exe files would be all those, don't know about the beta versions ones. I suggest to use the No-CD 1.1 version (a.k.a. Speedboot indeed), edited from the 1.1 patched version.

I'ved modified the exe files so that instead of looking for mm2.lock or trouble.rtf, it will look for whatever.exe. So you won't have to use any tools.

This is mainly aimed at developers, I've included 2 versions of each *.exe file, one with zip support and one without zip support - purely optional.

That is a list of *.exe files I have on my system, I decided only to patch the 1.0 nocd and 1.1 nocd as well as another version. Due to the fact that, 1.0 works best on one of my computers whereas 1.1 works better on my laptop - so whichever works best for the user. It's nice to have options.

Enjoy, bud.

Feedback & suggestions from people who use this would be nice, if your exe, or a compatible exe isn't in the archive, just ask me & I'll hook you up.

That's worrying - I don't understand why MM2CSC would be doing that. Has anyone else had this problem?

If you're using WinRAR as your archiver, I know it supports *.z, which is another archive, so if you use *.z instead of *.zip, then you can avoid MM2CSC removing your files - I've not tested this, I don't use MM2CSC.

7zip also supports .z archives.
