Chicago

Postby SuperSecret » Sat Aug 09, 2014 12:32 am

Ladies and gentlemen, I am proud to announce that finally, after 14 years since MM2's release, the city featured in its predecessor has been succesfully converted!

Yes, I mean:

CHICAGO!!!
Image

You can download it here: https://app.box.com/s/5czaez5uuelpltfrdqsw

It features the entire city, complete with the bridges, the train (with working sound!), all the races, with working opponents, and the Chicago Police Ford Mustang GT. It includes also a program (MM2HACK) that allows via memory editing some things not possible otherwise (in the case of Chicago, custom train sound and multiple water levels).

Special Thanks:
  • LV Volk and DeusRex, for their MM1 tools.
  • The guys at MM2C.com (mainly fre_ber and Yallis) who back in the early days of MM2 cracked the various file formats used by the game and made the discussions publicly available.
  • Fre_ber and Maxoff for their programs (the PSDL viewer and the City Toolkit).
  • Dummiesboy, for the file "p_do_not_enter.tex" from the MM2 Revisited V5 mod (the original MM2's one was faulty).
Warning: Unfortunately the city turned out very unstable, so you will almost certainly experience several crashes (probably caused by the massive props.pathset file) and freezes (caused for some reason by the .bai file).

Ok, and so? Sorry, but this reply is so inappropriate ahead the greatness of this release. Both are great releases, though.

Gave it a try. Good work. You forgot some lights. lol. But it doesn't have that mm1 feel, sadly. :(

@Franch: He knows I'm messing around. :P

The missing lights are caused by the intersection detection algorithm I used, it puts lights only when there are 4 or more roads. About the bug reported by aaro4130, that seems to be caused by the inaccurate detection of roads without sidewalks. I'll try to fix it.

I gotta say, I'm pretty impressed with this. It obviously took alot of work to get it working the way it is right now. I also love how you went to the trouble of including all of the original races from MM1. It didn't even crash my game during my testing. Impressive is the word that kept running through my mind while I was playing through this.

Far from perfect though, feels much more like a beta than a final release. There are plenty of visual issues; some are new, some are old. Alot of buildings were constructed from many different generic facades, and they used PTL (the MM1 version of CPVS) to hide alot of the weirdness that came from this. Everything seems to be rendered at once in this version. I also noticed a few areas where the PSDL you made was a bit messed up, mainly the tunnels. Even with those issues solved though, the city will never look as good as it did in MM1 simply because of MM2's fairly awful graphics engine. And of course, as mentioned by others, there are several BAI issues.

All in all though, it's still impressive. Chicago is a fairly large and complex level, and the inner workings of MM1 are entirely different than MM2. A conversion this complete is extremely difficult to pull off, and you've managed to do a pretty good job of it. It will never be as good as it is in MM1, and it does have some flaws that need ironed out, but overall this is very good for what it's trying to accomplish. Great work.

Thank you dummiesboy, consider that I also had to write the exporter scripts by myself, since the existing programs couldn't be used for such a big project (side note: 99% of roads and buildings have been adapted via script, else it would have been way too much work).

Also, I had to resort to a few dirty tricks to get it working correctly (for example, some roads look messed up because they had to be split in two to avoid bound problems, since road bounds are made up of quads, not tris)

I know you had to write your own tools to do alot of this, that's the main reason why I said it's impressive.
Come to think of it, it's funny you chose to release it today. This day marks the release of two great addons for both games. :)

I'm curious, how long have you been working on this?
