I'm running Windows 8.1 (New HP Pavilion 15 inch laptop!), so what can I do to run MM & 2 without lag?

Windows 8.1? Hmm, either dual-boot with Win 7 and play MM in Win 7, or setup a virtual machine of Win 7 and play MM there. Other than that, nothing else worked for me.

If we're talking of MM2 on non-supported platforms, I play it on Linux with Wine... just that GameRanger doesn't work, so I'm stuck offline...

What VM do you recommend?

Dual booting is a lot nicer in my opinion, if you have a large enough hard drive or a second hard drive. A lot of games run a lot smoother on Windows 7 (or anything but Win 8 ). Just make sure you can find the drivers for your system, and that you have a free partition or GPT type if you have one hard drive. VM's are cool, but I can never get full performance from them.

I think I found a way to play MM2 on Win8.1. Start the game and in the main menu press "Windows" button on the keyboard. Then reopen MM2 from the taskbar. Now the texts disappeared,
(https://www.mm2x.com/modules.php?op=modload ... 7&orderby=)
but the yellow text under the "Driver's stats" button is visible.
Now start any race (I recommend "Quick Race" option because it's in the lower right corner, so it's easy to find without a cursor)
Now the game doesn't lags, and you can use the HUD also. When you go back to the menu, the texts, arrows, etc. are visible, but the game doesn't lags. The only one "bug" is that the line on the loading screen is white instead of blue.
Or at least this happens on my PC...
